Minister of Interior: Cambodia Not Reluctant to Provide Refugee Status to Over 30 Montagnards

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng has reaffirmed that the Royal Government of Cambodia does not hesitate to provide more than 30 Montagnards the status as asylum seekers if they are legally justified so.

The affirmation was made yesterday in response to a comment by Ms. Rhona Smith, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia during a recent press conference here in Phnom Penh at the end of her ten-day visit in the Kingdom.

In one of her comments, Ms. Rhona Smith asked Cambodia to cooperate with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in order to ensure that more than 30 Montagnards are defended by United Nations and not sent back to Vietnam.

Unfortunately, as underscored Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng, those Montagnards have failed the justification to claim their refugee status and as a result they cannot be granted with it.
