Minister of Justice Meets UN Special Rapporteur

Minister of Justice H.E. Ang Vong Vathana received visiting Ms. Rhona Smith, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights at his ministry here in Phnom Penh yesterday.

The meeting touched primarily on pilot initiative of community services as punishment for law abusers, according to H.E. Chin Malin, Spokesperson at the Ministry of Justice.

H.E. Ang Vong Vathana highlighted the government's on-going pilot practice of community service fulfilment as penalty for those who violate the laws in Cambodia and whose cases are not severe.

The intention of the pilot project, added the minister as reported by H.E. Chin Malin, is to address emerging issue of over-crowded prisons, and it will be implemented in Battambang province.

Ms. Rhona Smith expressed her support for the project and encouraged the ministry to expand the practice once it is proved to be successful.

Ms. Rhona Smith arrived in Cambodia on Aug. 8 for a ten-day visit, mainly to examine the rights of children and general human rights situation in the country.

The UN special rapporteur undertakes regular visits to Cambodia and reports annually to the Human Rights Council.

Ms. Rhona Smith was appointed to cover Cambodia in March 2015. She will present her next report to the Council in September 2017.
