Ministry of Economy and Finance Explains the Country’s Debt Figures

In response to some social media’s reports about Cambodia’s foreign debt data, the Ministry of Economy and Finance released a clarification on this issue yesterday.

The ministry was quoted by local media as saying that by the end of 2015, the foreign debts of public sector are worth only US$5.6 billion, the rest is the private sector’s debts.

The nearly US$10 billion Cambodia’s debt figures released by development partners and quoted by some social media networks and websites are not under the state’s responsibility to pay back, explained the ministry of Economy and Finance, stressing that some US$4 billion owed by the private sector has to be reimbursed by the private sector itself.
