MoI, UNHCR Discuss Solution for Remaining Montagnard Asylum Seekers

Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng, yesterday received UNHCR senior regional delegation to resolve the case of remaining Montagnard asylum seekers, being temporarily accommodated in UN-supported centre in Phnom Penh, according to a local media report.

Mr. James Lynch, Regional Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), who led the visiting delegation, was optimistic that the remaining issue will be addressed by the close of this year.

Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng informed the UNHCR delegation that the General Department of Immigration at the Ministry of Interior is working hard to coordinate the registration and refugee status determination among those Montagnards.

After gaining their refugee status though a proper procedure, the asylum seekers will be sent to the Philippines where they will be supported by the UNHCR team to apply for their ultimate country to live in.

Montagnards are indigenous minorities who have fled Vietnam into Cambodia where the government is working with the concerned UN agency for a best solution for all parties.
