More Light-Rail Feasibility Study Done in Search for Best Option for Phnom Penh

Ministry of Public Works and Transport is conducting more light-rail feasibility study before deciding on the best city train option for Phnom Penh.

The update was shared by Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport H.E. Sun Chanthol at a recent road safety meeting at the Ministry of Interior here in Phnom Penh.

The feasibility study of monorail option is being conducted by a group of Chinese experts and its result will be compared with a study already done by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on automated gateway transit (AGT) possibility for Phnom Penh, added the senior minister.

It’s time for Phnom Penh to conduct comprehensive studies to find out whether the option of city rail, AGT, metro, or monorail will work best, said H.E. Sun Chanthol.

He continued that the Royal Government of Cambodia will make a well-informed comparison of the studies by looking specifically on involved costs and efficiency of light-rail option to be introduced to the capital.

It is believed that the existence of the light rail transport will contribute vitally to reducing traffic congestion as well as road accidents in Phnom Penh.

To improve traffic in Phnom Penh capital, the government has so far introduced options of public transportation, including city bus and water taxi.
