NA President Supports UN’s Role in Strengthening Solidarity, Peace and International Security

The National Assembly of Cambodia supports the mission and role of the UN, especially the role of the UN Security Council in strengthening solidarity, maintaining international peace and security, as well as resolving ongoing disputes.

The support was voiced by Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the Cambodian NA, while receiving a courtesy call from visiting H.E. Abdulla SHAHID, President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), at the NA Palace in Phnom Penh this morning.

H.E. Abdulla SHAHID highlighted the close and indispensable role between the UN and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

He noted that Cambodia is a model country because it has turned from a country that received UN peacekeeping forces to a country deploying forces under the UN umbrella. He also wished Cambodia success in achieving its development goals of becoming an upper middle-income economy by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2050.

For his part, Samdech Heng Samrin thanked the UN for its support and cooperation in contributing to the development of Cambodia, particularly to the fight against COVID-19 pandemic through the provision of vaccines, technical equipment and medical materials.

According to the NA president, Cambodia has since 2006 dispatched more than 8,000 blue-beret troops to take part in 11 peacekeeping missions in nine countries, making the Kingdom 28th out of 122 countries.

At the same time, Samdech Heng Samrin laid stress on the NA’s active contribution to maintaining and building peace in the region and the world with other legislative partners, in particular through IPU, which is responsible for reporting to the annual UN General Assembly.
