National Reading Day 2017: Read for Life’s Attainment

Participating ministers to the recent National Reading Day celebration urged more attention to book-reading, especially among young generations being distracted by new communication technologies.

The second National Reading Day was organised at the National Institute of Education here in Phnom Penh on Mar. 11.

The Royal Government of Cambodia declared the date which is the birthday of the late prominent Cambodian Buddhist scholar Venerable Chuon Nath as the National Reading Day in order to promote reading among Cambodians.

Minister of Information H.E. Khieu Kanharith who participated in the event highlighted that social media like Facebook and YouTube do not provide as broad knowledge as books.

Ministers of Education, Youth and Sports H.E. Hang Chuon Naron and of Culture and Fine Arts H.E. Mrs. Phoeurng Sackona who were also there echoed the limitations of the new technologies and matchless role of book reading in contribution to knowledge enrichment.

The three ministers expressed their deep support for the celebration and urged parents to create enabling environment for reading at home and to help guide their children to make appropriate use of the new communication technologies.

Hosted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, the National Reading Day 2017 was themed "Read for Life's Attainment".
