NBC Takes Action Following PM’s Recommendation over MFIs’ Status

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) held here yesterday afternoon a meeting under the chairmanship of its Governor H.E. Chea Chanto, after Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen made a public complaint over the official status of microfinance institutions (MFIs) operating in the country.

After the meeting, NBC advised all MFIs and rural credit operators across the country to add “Private Enterprise” on their respective registered logos and to provide clear information for their clients.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Buddhist achievements in Prek Pra pagoda in Khan Chbar Ampov on Feb. 8, Samdech Techo Hun Sen urged the NBC to inform the public clearly about the MFIs’ status. He also called for legal action against those who have propagated that MFIs are run by the state.

“MFIs don’t belong to the state, but to the private sector,” the Cambodian premier underlined.
