NEC Sets Registration Date for Candidates for June Commune Election

The three-day registration of candidates to stand for the fourth mandate of Commune/Sangkat Council Election in June will start from Mar. 3 to 5, 2017 in the 1,646 communes and Sangkat across the country.

H.E. Kouy Bunroeun, Vice Chairman of the National Election Committee (NEC), said in a meeting held on Feb. 28 that political parties wishing to compete in the upcoming Commune/Sangkat Council Election have to nominate their candidates to communes/sangkat election committee on the set date.

The candidates have to meet the requirements of NEC that they must have their name registered on the election list and registered as candidates via political parties, H.E. Kouy Bunroeun said.

NEC also refused to delay the deadline for political parties to register their eligible candidates to stand for the local election on June 4, 2017, despite complaints of unclear guidelines and complicated procedures.

By January 2017, 45 political parties have been registered at the Ministry of Interior, 12 of which were involved in court cases.

For forthcoming Commune/Sangkat Council Election, the Ministry of Interior has expanded the number of communes and Sangkat from 1,633 to 1,646.
