NEC: Voter Turnout Rate Is 99.79 Percent

About 99.79 percent or 11,670 of 11,695 eligible voters cast their respective votes for the 4th Legislature Senate Election organised today across the country, said H.E. Tep Nytha, Secretary General of the National Election Committee (NEC).

Speaking at a press conference held right after the completion of voting process this afternoon, H.E. Tep Nytha said most of the absent voters are seriously ill or on a mission in a foreign country.

The NEC secretary general concluded that today's Senate Election was run smoothly in a free and fair manner.

The statement of the dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party against this election is useless because there is no legal evidence for their argument, he added.

Four political parties the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), the royalist FUNCINPEC Party, Cambodian Youth Party (CYP), and Khmer National Unity Party competed for the 58 seats in the forth-term Senate Election. Two of the four remaining seats are nominated by His Majesty the King, and another two by the National Assembly.

In the 3rd Legislature Senate Election on Jan. 29, 2012, CPP won 46 seats and the then opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) got the remaining 11 seats.

According to NEC, more than 300 local and foreign journalists from 34 leading media institutions have been registered to cover this election at the 33 polling stations in the eight constituencies, taking place on Feb. 25 from 7:00 am to 03:00 pm.
