Opposition Leader Sentenced to Another 5 Years in Prison

The self-imposed exile President of the main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) H.E. Sam Rainsy was sentenced yesterday by Phnom Penh Municipal Court for another five years in prison over a fake border treaty between Cambodia and Vietnam.

The CNRP president and his two assistants were convicted in absentia for "being accomplices in faking public documents, using fake public documents and inciting serious chaos to social security".

His two assistants were also handed five-year sentences in prison, but they have to serve only three years.

The court also issued the arrest warrant for them.

In August 2015, H.E. Sam Rainsy posted on his Facebook page a video on former opposition senator Hong Sok Hour citing a fake border treaty between Cambodia and Vietnam. The latter was sentenced in November this year to seven years in prison.

Early this year, H.E. Sam Rainsy was given a two-year prison sentence for a defamation case filed by National Assembly President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin. Besides, in mid November 2015, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court also issued an arrest warrant for him for a pending case on defamation and incitement for discrimination sued by Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Hor Namhong.
