‘JOM JALAN BERSAMA NPC’ WALKATHON AIMS TO UNEARTH NEW TALENTS


KUALA LUMPUR: May 17 — The ‘Jom Jalan Bersama National Press Club (NPC) 2024’ walkathon to be held on June 2 will be a platform to unearth new walking talents in national sports.

NPC deputy president Haresh Deol said in the past Malaysia had many successful athletes in the walk events and among them were V. Subramaniam and Yuan Yufang who achieved glorious achievements on the international field, however, there now seems to be a dearth of such athletes.

‘Therefore with this programme which has the support of the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association (FTKLAA), we hope it will stimulate the involvement of more walkers in sports thus helping us to identify new talents,” he said when appearing as a guest on the Apa Khabar Malaysia programme aired on Bernama TV today.

According to Haresh, ‘Jom Jalan Bersama NPC’, which will flag off at 6.30 am at Padang Merbok here, will receive a boost with the participation of national sports legend Datuk M Jegathesan as well Yufang.

“Even though registration
is full, do not worry because this programme is held in a public place, so anyone interested in participating can come to the location,” he added.

MALAYSIA, UZBEKISTAN CAN WORK TOGETHER EXPLORING NEW AREAS OF DIGITILISATION, ENERGY TRANSITION – PM


TASHKENT: Malaysia and Uzbekistan can work together to explore new areas of digitalisation, energy transition and equip their people with new knowledge in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He added that Malaysia and Uzbekistan could also establish good cooperation in the halal, banking and food technology sectors.

‘Of course, we have to be pragmatic. We’re dealing with a very, very, very challenging world,’ he said iduring a joint press conference with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev here today.

Earlier Anwar paid a courtesy call to Mirziyoyev and held a meeting with the president.

Anwar said both countries should also enhance the quality of education in their countries, adding that it could be a potential collaboration in that sector a well.

He shared that Malaysia’s top companies and conglomerates would be participate in the High-Level Uzbekistan-Malaysian Business Forum at the Silk Road Samarkand Tourism Complex.

‘And that explains
why we support the whole idea of the business. Tomorrow, the leading players in the field with PETRONAS, EPF will participate. You’re not just dealing with just any country but an important country,’ he said.

Earlier, the special aircraft carrying Anwar, who was flying in from Kazakhstan, landed at the Tashkent International Airport at 2.15 pm local time.

Uzbekistan is the last stop of Anwar’s official visit to three Central Asian countries. He had visited the Kyrgyz Republic and Kazakhstan earlier.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister will visit the Imam Hazrati Complex here, where the original manuscript of the Caliph Usman Quran (Mashaf Uthmani) – the oldest in the world – is kept and displayed.

From Tashkent, he will travel to Samarkand, where he is expected to address participants of the Uzbekistan-Malaysian Business Forum at the Silk Road Samarkand Tourism Complex.

OVER RM387 MLN NEEDED TO REPAIR 531 DAMAGED SLOPES – NANTA


TEMERLOH, – The Ministry of Works requires over RM387 million to repair 531 damaged slopes across the country, said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

‘The cause of these incidents (damaged slopes) usually stemmed from natural disasters such as floods, besides heavy rainfall,’ he told reporters after inspecting the upgrading works on the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah bridge here today.

Commenting on slope repair works along Jalan Bentong Lama-Kuala Lumpur, Nanta said the ministry had allocated about RM6 million to the repair project involving three locations, namely Sections 47.40, 42.90 and 57.50.

He said the ministry has also identified another 53 damaged slopes in the same route that have yet to be repaired, requiring an additional allocation of RM51 million.

On the upgrading works of the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah bridge involving a cost of RM102 million, he said the project is 86 per cent complete and expected fully to be opened in August.

He said the upgrading project from two lanes to four lanes is
part of the solution to address traffic congestion issues on the bridge, especially during peak hours and festive seasons, as well as to enhance safety and comfort for road users.

‘The uniqueness of this project lies in the decking system of the 200-metre-long segmental box girder used in the main span of the bridge, which is among the longest in Malaysia,’ he added.

HRD CORP TO SPONSOR 1,000 TRUCKERS TO GET E LICENCE – ANTHONY LOKE


PUTRAJAYA: The Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) will sponsor 1,000 lorry drivers to obtain a Class E licence and goods driver licence (GDL).

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative was a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Human Resources to enable more people to be trained as lorry drivers and get a higher salary return.

“Those who qualify will be trained and undergo a test where the cost of RM2,000 to RM3,000 will be fully sponsored by HRD Corp.

“The government is committed to training new haulage drivers, and this is something we are doing in the hope that young people will be interested,” he said after chairing the National Logistics Task Force (NLTF) meeting here today.

On May 9, Loke said there were plans to work with HRD Corp to address the problem of the lack of professional drivers in the transport industry because it could have a significant impact on the industry.

The E licence involves heavy motor vehicles with an unladen weight exc
eeding 7,500 kilogrammes, while the GDL licence is for driving any commercially registered vehicle used to transport goods, such as lorries, vans, and other vehicles.

Loke said that MOT will soon implement a new initiative to allow electric prime mover vehicles on the road.

According to him, MOT has received applications from several companies wanting to establish cooperation through the initiative.

“They want to run this EV prime mover (initiative), and MOT will allow it. We will launch it soon so that these logistics companies can adapt to this EV prime mover,” he said.

At the NLTF meeting, he also said the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation presented the prospect of transitioning to renewable energy that can positively impact the logistics industry.

“We also welcome these logistics industry companies such as warehouses to install solar panels so they can also use renewable energy,” he added.

SWCORP CONFIDENT THAT NATIONAL RECYCLE RATE TARGET ACHIEVABLE


ALOR SETAR, – The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) is convinced that the targeted National Recycle Rate of 37.50 per cent can be achieved with various public awareness campaigns implemented.

Its chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Ahmad Husaini Abdul Rahman said this was due to the percentage achieved had exceeded yearly targets, with 31.50 per cent for 2021, 2022 (32.50 per cent), 2023 (35 per cent), 2024 (37.50 per cent) and 40 per cent for 2025.

“SWCorp holds various public awareness programmes to raise the recycle rate in line with the National Cleanliness Policy that emphasises on three clusters, cleanliness, environmental sustainability and a circular economy,” he told reporters after launching the Free Used Fabric Drive Thru, the Trash to Cash Drive Thru and Let’s Sell Used Cooking Oil programmes in conjunction with the three-day Kedah 3R Fiesta that ends tomorrow.

He shared that the fabric collection programme, that began in 2016, is to allow the public to send wear
able used clothes for the use of those in need like non-governmental organisations (NGO). with data recorded till last February showing that nearly 27 tons of fabric were collected in an effort to reduce waste at landfills and to inculcate the habit of recycle and reuse.

‘So we hope more NGOs and private concerns show up and help the government in making such awareness programmes about 3R – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – a success and reduce plastic waste for the betterment of future generations,’ he added.

Meanwhile E-Idaman Sdn Bhd (EISB) CEO Zaki Abdul Aziz Daud said that his company developed the app idamanXchange in 2022 to encourage the public to be involved in recycling.

“The app provides cash rewards, along with points collected for recycling activities that can be redeemed in Boost and Touch’n’Go apps, and is not limited to the people in Kedah, as currently there are over 20,000 users, including from Penang, Perak, Selangor and Sabah,’ he added.
