Phnom Penh Municipal Governor Meets Japanese Delegation

Phnom Penh Municipal Governor H.E. Pa Socheatevong met here yesterday with a visiting Japanese delegation led by H.E. Hiroyuki Yoshiie, State Minister at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

During the meeting, H.E. Hiroyuki Yoshiie informed the Phnom Penh governor of the intention of Japan's Kanagawa Prefecture to cooperate with Phnom Penh on environmental sector.

H.E. State Minister said through this cooperation, the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries will be further enhanced.

For his part, H.E. Pa Socheatevong informed the Japanese side of the major challenges in the capital city, including traffic congestion, sewage, and garbage. He thus spoke highly of the assistance from Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in addressing the traffic issue by installing new traffic lights at 117 places, establishing public transport services, and improving the drainage system.

H.E. Pa Socheatevong said he will assign Mr. Mean Chanyada, a Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh to work with the Japanese side on the environmental cooperation before reaching an agreement.
