PM Explains Early Announcement on Commune/Sangkat Council Election Date

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen said the announcement of the specific date for the 4th Commune/Sangkat Council Election was made earlier than it should be.

In fact, the announcement should be made nine months prior to the election, but this time, it is almost one year, said the premier while presiding over a graduation ceremony of the Asia Euro University held here this morning.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen explained that the early announcement of the election date is to allow all relevant ministries and institutions, political parties, the National Election Committee, and citizens to be ready for the election.

The prime minister took the opportunity to call on all eligible Cambodian citizens to register their name in order to be able to fulfill their rights. He also hoped that the upcoming election will be conducted smoothly and there will be no accusation over election fraud and name losses as in the previous elections.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined that the opposition party has only urged for the reform of NEC, but he himself requested the reform of the whole election process, including the computerised voter registration.

According to the royal government’s resolution released yesterday, the fourth-mandate Commune/Sangkat Council Election will take place on Sunday June 4, 2017.
