Quality Inclusive Education Mainstreamed in New Academic Year

Ministry of Education will improve school’s resources and facilities for quality inclusive teaching and learning in the new academic year 2017-2018.

Quality education must ensure inclusion, starting from the pre-schooling until tertiary education, underlined Secretary of State for Education, Youth and Sports H.E. Im Koch when chairing the 5th national forum on inclusive education held recently at an outsourced venue here in Phnom Penh.

H.E. Im Koch defined inclusive education as an environment that promote effective learning of all children, regardless of their physical, mental, emotional and social circumstances such as those with disabilities and from unfortunate backgrounds.

According to the Head of Special Education Office, Mr. Thong Rithy, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports is ready for the mainstreaming of inclusive education next year.

The said inclusive education approach mixes children with special condition with ordinary ones, however, teachers – if necessary with assistant teachers – are equipped with skills to facilitate meaningful learning and participation of the special students. And there are more mechanisms, he added.

Ministry’s figures show that there are some 1,900 special students attending primary schools across Cambodia.

H.E. Im Koch called for good cooperation among concerned government’s institutions as well as from development partners to ensure successful rollout of quality inclusive education.
