Rare Sambars Found in Cambodia

Sambars (Rusa unicolor) listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species have been spotted in Cambodian forests.

The good news was shared on Feb. 3 by the Ministry of Environment, adding that Sambars were founded in protected areas of the country.

The researchers from the Ministry of Environment have discovered them in Cambodian wildlife sanctuaries through camera traps.

Sambar — a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia — is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008.

Its population has declined substantially due to severe hunting, local insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.
