Ruling Party Leader Calls for Another Amendment to Political Party Law

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), appealed here this morning for another amendment to the Law on Political Parties.

While presiding over a meeting to commemorate the 66th CPP Founding Anniversary held at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre, Samdech Techo Hun Sen asked the lawmakers from CPP to propose the amendment to the Law on Political Parties.

I'd like to request all lawmakers from CPP to propose the amendment to the Political Party Law so that prisoners have no right to political participation, he added.

The Law on Political Parties, adopted in 1997, was recently amended to maintain the political stability and prevents the nation from war and national division. Under the amended law, any individual who is convicted of a crime or who is a prisoner cannot become the president and vice-president of a political party. If the leader of a political party committed a serious offence, that political party could be dissolved, and the political rights of the party's management are suspended for a certain period of time.
