Swiss State Secretary Concludes Visit in Cambodia

The Embassy of the Switzerland has released the outcomes of the visit of State Secretary at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ms. Pascale Baeriswyl in Cambodia from July 29 to Aug. 1, 2019.

According to its press release AKP received this morning, ahead of this week’s ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, H.E. Ms. Pascale Baeriswyl visited Siem Reap and Phnom Penh highlighting the longstanding bilateral relations and Switzerland’s commitment to Cambodia’s development efforts.

“She went to see a number of development projects in Siem Reap province, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. During her stay in Phnom Penh, she held talks with Cambodian Government representatives of the Ministries of Interior and Economy and Finance, visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, discussed with members of civil society and hosted this year’s official Swiss National Day reception,” it said.

During the visit, H.E. Ms. Pascale Baeriswyl also joint here with Their Majesties King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk at the inauguration of the new pediatric heart surgery unit of Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospitals.

In the meetings with representatives of the Royal Government of Cambodia and Swiss National Day Meeting with the Acting Minister of Interior, H.E. Ms. Baeriswyl and H.E. Sak Setha reviewed Switzerland’s long-standing partnership and cooperation, putting a particular focus on decentralisation, governance and civil sector empowering. Calling on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, H.E. Dr. Aun Pornmoniroth, H.E. Ms. Baeriswyl and H.E Minister appraised the two government’s engagement in assuring a sustainable financing model for the Kantha Bopha Hospitals.

The Swiss State Secretary underlined the importance of Direct Democracy and pluralism for her country, including in her National Day speech, and emphasised the importance of open political and civic spaces.

From Phnom Penh, State Secretary Baeriswyl will proceed to Bangkok to participate at this year’s ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where she will represent Switzerland in its capacity as ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner, a status attained in 2016.

In terms of the Swiss’ assistance, the Cambodia country programme is part of the Swiss Mekong Region Cooperation Strategy 2018-2021. SDC aspires to support government and non-government actors in Cambodia and Lao PDR to become equal and empowered partners within the ASEAN community.
