The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) of Cambodia, the National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) and the Asia Pacific International Wine and Spirits Alliance (APIWSA) sign Memorandum of Understanding in support of an extensive National Road Safety Campaign throughout 2017.

Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, H. E. Sun Chanthol, and Cyril Sayag, Director of the Asia Pacific International Wine and Spirits Alliance (APIWSA) signed an MoU on 13 December 2016 that aims to support an extensive year-long safe driving education initiative in 2017.

Featuring famous personalities depicting real life reenactments, the campaign will reach high schools, entertainment and restaurant venues, throughout 2017.

According to NRSC statistics, Cambodia suffered an alarming 4,519 reported road accidents with 13,649 casualties in 2015 alone.

“There are too many road fatalities in Cambodia due to a lack of education among the public, and we need to cooperate with all stakeholders in the media, the entertainment industry, the private sector and our development partners to reduce the number of casualties in the Kingdom”, said H.E. Sun Chanthol during a ceremony to sign the MoU. “These figures have a huge impact on the livelihoods of tens of thousands of families. We are deeply concerned about this and are doing our utmost to reduce the number of accidents that cause injury and fatalities in our country as fast as possible”.

During the ceremony, an action plan was presented detailing the initiatives that are part of the 2017 National Road Safety Campaign.

These include a series of ten highly impactful TV spots, with reenactments by Cambodian television personalities. The spots are being aired and generously donated by national television networks and cover different themes on road safety.

Plan are being put in place to deliver a driver safety awareness campaign utilizing Tuk-Tuk signage, high school programs with theatre performances, posters in restaurant and entertainment outlets, print advertisement, billboards and a social media campaign.

The overall campaign is supported by some of Cambodia’s re-known stars from the entertainment industry who are donating their time to act and be featured on promotional material.

“We are grateful to be given the chance to support the Cambodian people through this initiative with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the National Road Safety Committee.”, said Cyril Sayag from APIWSA. “The corporate private sector has a responsibility to give back to society by educating the public about how to drink responsibly and we are glad to be a part of the overall campaign to reduce traffic fatalities”.

The ceremony was also attended by a delegation from the National Road Safety Committee, senior officials from the MPWT and private sector donors.
