Three-day Khmer New Year Holiday Attracts 4.6 Million Visitors

Nearly 4.6 million national and international tourists were recorded across the country during the three-day holiday of the Traditional Khmer New Year, from April 14 to 16, said H.E. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism.

The minister added that among the visitors, 4,561,477 were national tourists and 28,849 others were internal foreign visitors.

According to H.E. Thong Khon, the first day of this year’s Khmer New Year celebration attracted 862,897 visitors, the second day 1,579,251, and the last day 2,148,178.

The most visited destination during the three-day holiday is Battambang province, followed by the provinces of Kampong Cham, Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, Prey Veng, Kampong Speu, Pursat, Kampong Chhnang, Kampot and Preah Sihanouk, and Phnom Penh capital.

“Overall, under the shadow of full peace and security in the country and thanks to the continuous infrastructure development and confidence in the effectiveness of vaccination against the COVID-19 pandemic, people have the opportunity to visit all tourism destinations throughout the country on the occasion of the New Year, event at some remote areas and in the context of COVID-19,” H.E. Minister said.

During Khmer New Year holiday in 2019, there were some 4.7 million national and international tourists. The New Year celebrations were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 threat.
