Tourism Sector Growth to Slow Down

Cambodia’s tourism sector is forecast to grow at a slower pace this year because of the decrease in foreign arrivals due to the ongoing COVID-19 fears.

Speaking at a press conference here on Mar. 2, H.E. Tith Chantha, Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Tourism, said that the growth is predicted to slow down about 10 percent compared to that of 2019.

Chinese tourists, the main tourism market for Cambodia, will go abroad less than previous years due to the COVID-19 outbreak, therefore the growth in 2020 will be affected, H.E. Tith Chantha said.

With the predicted arrival of foreign tourists to Cambodia to decline, the ministry is strengthening the quality of tourism products and services at the main tourism destinations with an aim to lure domestic tourists, he stressed.

At the same time, the ministry is working to ensure that tourism services and products are promoted and strengthened to attract tourists, he added.

Last year, domestic tourists were recorded at 11.5 million while 6.6 million foreign tourists visited the Kingdom.
