Traffic Accidents Up 47 Percent during Khmer New Year Holiday

Traffic accidents during the Khmer New Year holiday 2019 saw an increase by 47 percent compared to the same period in the previous year, according to a report of the Traffic Police and Public Order Department of the General Commissariat of National Police.

From April 13 to 17, 2019, a total of 134 road accident cases were recorded, killing 59 people, up 26 percent, and injuring 238 others, up 66 percent, it pointed out.

Most of the road accidents were caused by excessive speeding (54 cases) and the rest by drink-driving, overtaking and other traffic law violations, it added.

Phnom Penh capital had the highest record of traffic accidents with 20 cases, followed by Pursat province with 12 cases, and Kampong Chhnang province with 6 cases, said the report.
