UN Secretary General Expects to Meet Cambodian PM in Upcoming ASEAN Summit in Laos

The United Nations Secretary General H.E. Ban Ki-moon expressed his hope to meet with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Kingdom of Cambodia, in the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Laos.

The information was revealed in the readout of a phone conversation on June 8 between Cambodia’s Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn and H.E. Ban Ki-moon, released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation yesterday evening.

H.E. Ban Ki-moon expressed his concerns about reports of intimidation, harassment and arrests of civil society actors, the media, members of the opposition party, National Election Committee, and lawmakers.

The UN secretary-general appealed to the Cambodian government to ensure full respect for human rights, the freedoms of expression, association, and assembly, and called for the resumption of the culture of dialogue between the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

In reply, H.E. Prak Sokhonn explained to H.E. Ban Ki-moon the real situation in Cambodia, especially related to the case of H.E. Kem Sokha, Acting President of CNRP.

The Cambodian top diplomate also mentioned about the normalisation of people’s daily life and the press freedom in Cambodia, as well as the cause of stagnation of the culture of dialogue, stressing that the culture of dialogue was initiated by Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

H.E. Ban Ki-moon thanked H.E. Prak Sokhonn for the clarification, and called for a collaboration to realise a full democratisation based on law. He also sent his greetings to Samdech Techo Hun Sen and he hoped to meet him in the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Laos.
