US$39 Million Telecommunications Backbone Network Launched

Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has kick-started a Greater Mekong Telecommunications Backbone Network Project to modernise the country's information communication technology.

Addressing the function, H.E. Tram Iv Tek, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications said the project plays a crucial role to facilitate communication and research, and build confidence for investments which will eventually contribute to Cambodia's economic development.

The project also helps integrate the Greater Mekong Sub-regional countries as well as promote the national development initiatives, according to Mr. Sorn Vy, Director General of Telecom Cambodia.

Launched at Takeo province, the project costs over 3,000 million yens or approximately US$39 million.

Financed by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the network connects key locations in Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Kandal, Takeo, Kep, Kampot and Preah Sihanouk province.
