Water Taxi Service To Start in April

The first-ever water taxi service linking Prek Phnov in the northern part of Phnom Penh to Takhmao town in Kandal province via Tonle Sap, Mekong, and Bassac rivers is expected to be launched in April this year.

Six of the planned 15 water-taxi service stations are going to be built for the boat-based service, said H.E. Va Simsorya, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

Officials are working on the selection of proper places to build the stations as the deadline for waterway passenger transport service is set by April of 2018, he pointed out.

Each boat of 14 metres in length and 3.9 metres in width will carry not more than 48 passengers, according to a master plan of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport H.E. Sun Chanthol said the water taxi system will contribute to reducing traffic jams on main roads and in the first stage, the service is only for passengers. The ministry is planning to build ports along rivers for agricultural product transportation, he added.
