With This One, Srei Snam District of Siem Reap Needs Only One More Health Center

With the existence of Daun Sok health center officially opened late last week, remote and former war-torn Srei Snam district – almost 100 kilometres from Siem Reap provincial town – needs only another one to announce that all its communes has such health facility.

According to the district’s governor Mr. Mak Samphea, residents in Sleng Spean and Klang Hay communes continue to depend heavily on traditional treatment which at times put their health at risks.

With the newly opened Daun Sok health center in Sleng Spean commune, he added, over 3,000 locals will have access improved health services and only Klang Hay commune of his district does not have health center.

Daun Sok health center is the sixth health center of Srei Snam district that has seven communes.

The new health facility was funded by Gyeonggi Provincial Government Authority through Plan International in Korea and Cambodia.

Before its existence, the locals had to travel an average of around 20 kilometre road to access the nearest health clinic. The long distance discouraged their demand for proper health care which, as a result, put them in higher health risk condition.

Child friendly playground, welcoming staff and sufficient supplies of the health clinic are expected to boost primary health care service among the population there, over 50 percent of them are women and children.

H.E. Prof. Tan Vouch Chheng, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health and H.E. Sang Riha, Siem Reap Deputy Provincial Governor who presided over the inauguration of Daun Sok health center appreciated the contribution from the development partner to bring primary health care close to the people in far-flung community.

They also encouraged the community people to make use and engage in maintaining the health clinic.

Siem Reap Programme Unit Manager of Plan International Cambodia Mr. Hang Bona shared that the organisation is seeking more financial support to fill up the need of one more health center of Srei Snam district.
