COVID-19: 268 New Cases Bring Tally to 115,875

Cambodia this morning reported 268 new cases of COVID-19; bringing the national counts to 115,875, according to a press release of the Ministry of Health.
Of the new infections, 24 were imported and the rest were linked to the Feb. 20 community outbreak, it pointed out, stressing that they are PCR test results.
Meanwhile, the same source added, there were 359 new recoveries, but 25 new deaths; the total cured and death cases in the Kingdom therefore jumped to 109,655 and 2,584, respectively.
The first COVID-19 case was detected in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province. The confirmed cases have surged quickly this year due to the Feb. 20 incident.

CDC Approves US$3.3 billion worth Investment Projects in First Three Quarters

The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) approved a total of 134 investment projects with a cumulative investment amount of US$3.3 billion in the January-September period.
Number of investment projects decreased by 24 percent compared to the same period last year and the total investment capital dropped by 48 percent, according to a CDC’s report.
The approved investment projects generated about 85,572 jobs.
Of the projects, 101 with US$1.4 billion investment capital are located outside the special economic zones (SEZs) and 33 others worth US$1.9 billion are situated inside the SEZs.
Last year, CDC granted licences to 238 investment projects with a total registered capital of US$8.2 billion.

Cambodia Establishes Digitalised Manufacturing Centre

The Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) establishes the first ever centre of digitalised manufacturing aiming to contribute to producing high‐capacity resources and training programmes in the field of digital manufacturing at top level quality and precision.
Named Cambodia-Japan Digitalised Manufacturing Centre, it received support from Japanese government.
The Japanese government, through the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, has provided approximately 500 million yen (US$4.5 million) in support of the centre located at RUPP.
The grant was announced at a press conference here on Oct. 14 under the chairmanship of H.E. Dr. Mey Kalyan, Chair of Board of Trustees of RUPP, H.E. Mikami Masahiro, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia and H.E. Chet Chealy, Rector of RUPP.
The Royal University of Phnom Penh has partnered with the Japanese-German joint venture DMG-MORI, the world’s number one company in the production of state-of-the-art CNC machines in its curriculum.
Private sectors such as hi‐tech companies operating in PPSEZ like Minebea and Denso are also joining in the project.
The centre implements the well-known model of innovation which promote University-Industry-Government collaboration triangle to foster economic and social development as it support as complete production chain starting from knowhow to final product.
Graduates are expected to work at high‐tech collaborative companies in short‐term.
In the future, they will also play a key role in supporting other industries in the country to shift toward a new revolutionised smart digital manufacturing, thus upgrading the manufacturing sector, and eventually uplifting the country’s economic structure as a whole.

Administrative Measures Extended, But Many Businesses Excuded from Restrictions

Phnom Penh municipal administration has decided to continue its administrative measures for two more weeks, from Oct. 15 to 28, in order to combat and prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially the Delta variant.
According to the new directive issued this evening, high-risk occupational and business activities such as cinemas, KTVs, nightclubs, beer gardens and all kinds of entertainment businesses have to temporarily shut down for 14 more days.
Moreover, private gatherings of over 50 people will also be prohibited during the same period, but with some exceptions, it added.
Occupational and business activities and gatherings that are not restricted must carry out the health safety rules strictly, the directive underlined.
As of today, Cambodia’s COVID-19 tally rose to 115,875 of which 19,285 have been imported. The pandemic has so far claimed 2,584 lives, but 109,655 have recovered.
