Pepper Export Increases Sharply in 2021

Cambodia exported more than 28,000 tonnes of pepper to foreign markets last year, pointed out a recent report of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
This figure saw a sharp increase of 452.72 percent compared to 2020, it underlined.
Vietnam alone bought 27,117 tonnes, making the country the biggest market for Cambodian pepper.
The other markets were Germany, Thailand, France, India, Belgium, Taiwan of China, Czech Republic, Poland, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, United States, Switzerland, Sweden, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan and United Arab Emirates.
Pepper is grown in many areas in Cambodia, including Kampong Cham, Thbong Khmum, Kampot and Kep provinces. Kampot pepper is very well-known with high price. It was granted with the geographical indication (GI) from the EU in 2016 and from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2010.
Cambodia’s Kampot pepper has been also registered for international protection in 32 countries under the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications.

Weather Forecast: Light Rain Forecast This Week

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has forecast drizzle and light rain in the country from Jan. 6 to 9.
According to its announcement made public this morning, the affected regions would be the southern plains and the coastal areas.
For the temperature, it pointed out, from Jan. 5 to 11, it would vary between 20 and 33 degrees Celsius in the provinces in the central lowland areas, and from 19 to 32 degrees Celsius for the provinces next to the Dangrek mountain range and northeastern highland areas.
In the coastal areas, the temperature is said to be from 19 to 31 degrees Celsius, the same source added.

COVID-19: 10 More Imported Omicron Cases Recorded

Cambodia registered 10 more cases of Omicron, a new COVID-19 variant of concern; bringing the total Omicron cases in Cambodia to 85.
They are all imported cases, the Ministry of Health underlined in a news release this morning. The national counts thus jumped to 120,526.
At the same time, there were 11 new recoveries, but a new death; the total cured and death cases in the Kingdom rose to 116,963 and 3,015, respectively.
The first COVID-19 case was detected in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province.

Indonesia Reconfirms Support for Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2022

President of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Joko Widodo has reaffirmed that Indonesia will extend support for Cambodia for the success of its ASEAN chairmanship in 2022.
H.E. Joko Widodo made the reaffirmation in a telephone conversation this morning with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, according to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Personal Assistant to Samdech Techo.
H.E. Joko Widodo also extended New Year best wishes to Samdech Techo Hun Sen, his spouse and their family members, and expressed his congratulations to the Cambodian Premier on being the ASEAN Chair this year.
In reply, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked the Indonesian president for the New Year wishes and support for Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2022, as well as for his participation in the 13th ASEM Summit hosted by the Kingdom on Nov. 25-26, 2021.
The Cambodian Prime Minister spoke highly of the active contribution of Indonesia in initiating new ideas, including the recent ones – ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific which is a key document of ASEAN in managing its relations with external partners and maintaining the ASEAN Centrality, and the preparation of ASEAN travel corridor in response to the restrictions caused by COVID-19.

Over 9.2 Million People Registered on Voter List

Cambodia has in total 9,205,675 eligible voters, of them some 4,904,825 are women, according to the preliminary voter list 2021, issued yesterday by the National Election Committee (NEC).
The figure represents 87.94 percent of the total population of 18 years old and up, NEC pointed out.
Moreover, the number of polling stations across the country stands at 23,602.
Cambodia is going to hold the 5th Commune/Sangkat Council Election on June 5, 2022. .
