Cambodia, KOICA Discuss Request Survey of New Projects for 2024

The Cambodian Rehabilitation and Development Board of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CRDB/CDC) and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) held a roundtable dialogue here on May 16 to review request survey of new projects for 2024 in Cambodia.

The discussion took place physically at CRDB/CDC. The CRDB/CDC side was led by H.E. Chhieng Yanara, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and the Secretary General of CRDB/CDC, while the KOICA side was headed by Mr. Rho Hyunjun, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office.

According to a press release of KOICA Cambodia Office AKP receive this afternoon, the main purpose of the meeting is to explain the KOICA’s priority sectors such as Health, Rural Development, Digital, and Environment/Climate Change, to discuss KOICA’s new candidate projects for Cambodia in 2024, to share progress of on-going projects, finalised project plan for 2022 & 2023, and the newly dispatched volunteers.

On the occasion, H.E. ChhiengYanara expressed his appreciation to KOICA and the people and the Government of the Republic of Korea for the strong cooperation and partnerships that have been contributing to the socio-economic development of Cambodia.

For his part, Mr. Rho Hyunjun expressed his pleasure in undertaking the mission in Cambodia as the Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office. He highlighted the impressive achievements of the Royal Government of Cambodia, for the successful and effective implementation of government measures and intervention to address the COVID-19 pandemic, reopen the country, and reactivate the economic activities across all sectors.

Mr. Rho Hyunjun also laid stress on next step of working with Cambodian relevant ministries to develop the most feasible Project Concept Paper (PCP) of new projects for 2024.

H.E. Chhieng Yanara deeply appreciated the initiative he encouraged KOICA to discuss the technical details of the cooperation with concerned relevant ministries to develop PCP.

KOICA has provided a total of approximately US$316 million in grant aid since 1991, to assist the socioeconomic development of Cambodia. In 2022, KOICA’s estimated grant aid to Cambodia is expected to be around US$20.7 million.

Australia Strengthens Rice Seed Quality in Cambodia

The Australian Government is supporting quality rice seeds through the Quality Declared Seed (QDS) system under the Cambodia-Australia Agricultural Value Chain Programme (CAVAC), according to the Australian Embassy in Cambodia.

In the recent handover ceremony of QDS products in Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province with H.E Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mrs. Amber Cernovs, First Secretary of the Australian Embassy in Cambodia, said Australia has been supporting quality rice seeds since the 1980s. “The QDS system supports Cambodia’s own initiative for a comprehensive seed certification system,” she added.

For his part, H.E. Veng Sakhon thanked the Government of Australia through the CAVAC programme and the Government of Japan through JICA for their material, technical and financial support for the implementation of QDS project. It is hoped that the project will be strengthened and expanded nationwide, based on the highest quality assurance of all varieties.

Under the QDS, farmers have access to a special labelling system certifying the quality of their rice seeds, the embassy said.

Rice plays a key role as an economic driver in Cambodia, supporting rural development and food security. Ensuring farmers grow paddy from rice seeds of good quality remains a challenge.

COVID-19: Zero New Case in Cambodia for 9 Days in a Row

There is no registered new case of COVID-19 in Cambodia for nine consecutive days; the tally thus remains at 136,262, according to a press release of the Ministry of Health made public this morning.

Of the tally, 21,219 are imported cases while 14,459 are locally transmitted Omicron cases, the source pointed out.

Meanwhile, the ministry announced the recovery of three new patients; bringing the total cured cases in the Kingdom to 133,197, while the death toll remains at 3,056.

Despite the success, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has repeatedly appealed to his compatriots to stick to the health preventive measures and to get vaccinated.

The first COVID-19 case was detected in Cambodia in late January 2020 in Preah Sihanouk province.

Phase 2 of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives Preservation and Digitisation Discussed

The Ministry of Culture of Cambodia, KOICA and UNESCO have discussed possible collaboration in phase 2 of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives Preservation and Digitisation.

The discussion took place here last week between H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts (MoCFA), Mr. Hyunjun Rho, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office, and Mr. Sardar Umar Alam, UNESCO Representative in Cambodia.

This project was proposed by the UNESCO and MoCFA of Cambodia with the aim of capitalising on the existing work to promote Tuol Sleng Genocide Mueum (TSGM) as a centre of excellence for peace education and global citizenship education (GCED), and to demonstrate it as a green and digital museum model site for tourism and learning, said KOICA in a news release.

During the meeting, it added, Mr. Hyunjun Rho requested UNESCO and the MoCFA to work together to develop the most feasible Project Concept Paper (PCP) for a new project “Strengthening Digitisation and Conservation for Cambodia” or “Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives Preservation and Digitisation, Phase II” and submit the PCP to KOICA through the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia by early July 2022.

Upon receipt of PCP, the KOICA Cambodia Office will report to its headquarters to select the priority projects for implementation in 2024. If this project passes the selection, it will be implemented in Cambodia from 2024 until 2028 with a total budget of US$2 million.

KOICA and UNESCO have agreed to work together on the project “Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives Preservation and Digitisation” from 2015 to 2020 with a grant aid of US$1,150,000. Under the project, the TSGM’s archives of over 700,000 pages have been preserved and almost half a million of them have been digitised.
