PM Says War Destroys Cambodia’s Technical and Technological Growth

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia said that war has destroyed the technical and technological growth of Cambodia.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony for more than 5,000 students of the National Technical Training Institute, held at the Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh this morning, the Premier underlined that technical thinking is not a new beginning in Cambodia.

It has been considered since the 1960s, but civil war and the Khmer Rouge have killed it and other sectors.

Cambodia has been working hard to develop technology, and this technical school was established in 1957 called the Preah Kossomak technological school, he said.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen continued that the war destroyed the technical growth of Cambodia until the Pol Pot regime is over.

If there was no war in Cambodia in the 1970s, how far the Kingdom would develop, he added.

At that time (1970s), the per capita income in Cambodian reached up to US$200, while that in South Korea was only US$78.

“This (civil war) is due to leadership mistakes,” Samdech Techo Prime Minister stressed.

Cambodian Monarchs Grant Royal Audience to Chinese President and His Wife

His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, and Her Majesty Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, granted a royal audience to Chinese President H.E. Xi Jinping and his wife, Lok Chumteav Peng Liyuan, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing last Friday, according to Chinese News Agency Xinhua.

On the occasion, H.E. Xi Jinping pointed out that over the past 65 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Cambodia, no matter how the international landscape evolved, the China-Cambodia friendship has lasted and shown new vitality, and their bilateral relations have become a model of international relations.

This is due to the profound friendship forged and nurtured by the older generation of Chinese leaders and former King Norodom Sihanouk, he said.

Noting that Their Majesties the King and Queen-Mother have witnessed China’s reform and development, H.E. Xi Jinping said they have always cared about China’s development and are good friends of the Chinese people.

The Chinese top leader said the goal of awarding the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China to the Queen-Mother in 2020 was to thank her for her special contribution to China-Cambodia friendship.

“We should take over the baton of China-Cambodia friendship, let the ironclad friendship between the two countries be passed down from generation to generation, and write a new chapter in building the China-Cambodia community with a shared future,” he added.

H.E. Xi Jinping emphasised that the Communist Party of China is uniting and leading the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in advancing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts through a Chinese path to modernisation and is committed to peaceful development and win-win cooperation on the new journey of the new era.

China stands ready to work with Cambodia to build a cooperation framework in six major areas and supports Cambodia in building the “Industrial Development Corridor” and the “Fish and Rice Corridor,” he said, adding that the country is also willing to accelerate the building of a China-Cambodia community with a shared future.

China will continue to support the Cambodian king’s working group in bringing more benefits to the Cambodian people, he added.

Noting that China has provided selfless help and support to Cambodia for a long time, the Cambodian monarchs said they have been paying close attention to China’s development and are sincerely happy about China’s achievements.

Cambodia appreciates the Belt and Road Initiative and the concept of building a community with a shared future for humankind, and is willing to work with China to take the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and China as an opportunity to deepen friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields and pass on the traditional friendship from generation to generation, they said.

Their Majesties the King and Queen-Mother have been on a routine medical visit in China since Feb. 12, 2023.
