Cambodia Earns Three Medals at 2023 Ju-Jitsu Asian Championship in Thailand

Cambodia has earned three medals – two silver and one bronze – at different matches held last Saturday as part of the 7th Ju-Jitsu Asian Championship in Thailand, according to Mr. Sean Sopheak, Secretary General of Ju-Jitsu Federation of Cambodia.

The silver medalists are Mr. Sar Sophanuth and Ms. Tin Sovanlinna for Show Mixed; and for Show Female are Ms. Tin Sovanlinna and Ms. Heng Sivheang; while the bronze medalists are Mr. Touch Pikakda and Mr. Kongmona Mithora for Show Male, emphasied the secretary general.

Taking place from Feb. 24 to 28 in Bangkok, the tournament is attracting the participation of over 500 athletes from 30 countries in Asian continent.

Mr. Sean Sopheak was positive that the event will help further sharpen the capacity of Cambodian Ju-Jitsu athletes for the 32nd SEA Games 2023 to be hosted by Cambodia.

NBC, CMA Jointly Promote Formal Financial Services at Commune Level

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and the Cambodia Microfinance Association (CMA) have jointly launched the “Strengthening Safe Finance in Community” project, aimed at promoting financial literacy, consumer empowerment, and protection at the community level in Cambodia.

The launching ceremony took place late last week under the presidency of H.E. Rath Sovannorak, Assistant Governor and Director General of Banking Supervision of NBC, and CMA Chairman Mr. Sok Voeun, as well as relevant stakeholders.

The project’s primary objective is to enhance the safe and secure use of formal financial services in commune and increase access to these services in alignment with the Safe Commune-Village policy of the Royal Government.

The project’s implementation calls for the active participation and support of NBC, CMA, government agencies, authorities, national and international NGOs, development partners and key stakeholders.

The project will contribute to the improvement of living standards and development in the pilot areas and across Cambodia in the long-term goal via the existing mechanism of commune councils, according to a press release issued on Feb. 27.

It seeks to strengthen partnerships and mobilise resources to enhance the quality of implementation, document evidence, and apply best practices to expand the project’s scope in the future.

“Public confidence on the formal financial sector is crucial that NBC and stakeholders have been putting great efforts in strengthening financial literacy and consumer protection to maintain the stability of the whole banking system and increase financial inclusion in Cambodia,” said H.E. Rath Sovannorak, Assistant Governor and Director General of Banking Supervision of NBC.

CMA Chairman Mr. Sok Voeun also stated that the project’s implementation requires close coordination and collaboration among stakeholders, including citizens and local authorities.

“We will work together to ensure an effective implementation of the project, and we are confident that it will contribute significantly to enhancing financial literacy, consumer empowerment, and protection in Cambodia,” he said.

The “Strengthening Safe Finance in Community” is a crucial initiative that integrates the Safe Commune-Village policy of the government and responsible financial inclusion.

The project is a significant step towards promoting financial inclusion and ensuring consumer protection and empowerment in Cambodia. The project’s successful implementation will improve access to formal financial services, contribute to poverty reduction, and enhance economic growth and development in the country.

Russey Keo Flyover To be Opened for Temporary Use This Week

The Russey Keo flyover will be put into temporary use on Mar. 1, 2023, according to Phnom Penh municipal administration’s announcement on Friday.

The temporary opening will be made with the agreement in principle of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in order to ease the traffic flows and people’s travel, the source said.

The new flyover is located along the National Road No. 5 in Klaing Saing village, Sangkat Russey Keo, Khan Russey Keo.

Constructed by the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC), a local construction company, the Russey Keo flyover stretches 483 metres longm 15.8 metres wide and 5 metres high.

Health Senior Official: Situation of H5N1 in Roleang Village under Control

The situation of avian influenza (H5N1) in Roleang village, Romleach commune, Sithor Kandal district, Prey Veng province, is now under control, affirmed on Monday H.E. Dr. Or Vandine, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Chairperson of Ad-hoc Committee for Rolling Out COVID-19 Vaccination Throughout the Country (ACC-19).

Only two cases of H5N1 have been detected and confirmed by the lab, she wrote, adding that a girl (11 years old and 6 months) passed away and her father confirmed positive for H5N1 is under the medical care and treatment in district hospital.

“After treating him, his additional sample was tested and got negative result as I received the information this morning of Feb. 27, 2023, but he is still in hospital to complete his treatment course according to the drug usage’s protocol,” she continued.

A total of 29 samples – 16 closed contacts and 13 illness like influenza (ILI) – collected by the investigation team have been tested by the laboratory with all negative results, she pointed out.

H.E. Dr. Or Vandine took the opportunity to re-appeal to the public to implement precaution measures by regularly washing hands with soap and water, not to touch or stay away from sick or dead poultry, eat well cooked foods ..

“Any suspect, kindly report to a local health authority or if any suspected signs and symptoms, please seek medical examination at a hospital nearby or call 115,” she said.

The two confirmed human cases of H5N1 are the first cases reported in Cambodia since 2014, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Cambodia.

Seven Cities Win Clean City Awards for 2022-2025

Seven cleanest cities in the country have been selected in the National Clean City Contest after Cambodia has reopened the country to welcome back foreign tourists since November 2021, along with the campaign “Clean Cambodia” for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in 2023.

The seven cities obtaining the Clean City Awards for 2022-2025 will represent Cambodia to compete with other ASEAN cities in an all-ASEAN contest.

Those cities are Sihanoukville, Battambang city, Siem Reap city, Daun Penh district, Kep city, Kampot city, and Kampong Cham city. They are rated with three flowers of Romduol, the national flower, for the 2022-2025 period. Three flowers are rated as the best, followed by two flowers and a flower.

Tourism Minister H.E. Thong Khon said that the capital, provincial, and local administrations have to join the National Clean City Contest, and the participation of citizens, tourists and other stakeholders is also required to develop a city with clean environment, clean hygiene, and attractive to national and international tourists.

“The purpose of the Clean City Contest is to encourage our cities to be clean, to attract tourists, and local authorities at all levels have to play a key role in the development of a clean city as well as the encouragement of local citizens’ participation,” he said.

The ministry instructed all authorities and the private sector to join hands to raise awareness on environmental sanitation and the importance of having a clean city, particularly promote tourism destinations and environment sustainable development.
