34 Inmates Completed Online Basic Education

Thirty-four (34) inmates in correctional centres have successfully completed the online Basic Education Equivalency Programme (BEEP), according to a recent news release.

They are among the 40 inmates enrolled in the first batch of BEEP, proving its success and potential expansion.

The programme is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, UNESCO, and other development partners.

Deputy Secretary General and Director of the Department of Non-Formal Education H.E. Kouch Koulom explained that the students who have completed the BEEP programme are formally recognised with a certificate equivalent to their ninth grade completion.

The certificate can allow them to continue their education and vocational training of their choice, he added.

Chief of Education Unit and Programme Specialist at UNESCO Ms. Esther McFarlane said that the BEEP programme aims to secure employment opportunities for young people in Cambodia.

With the success
of the first batch of inmates in correctional centres, the programme is enrolling an additional 40 new students for the second batch.
