5th Senate Election Kicks Off


The Senate Election 2024, the fifth of its kind, kicked off at 33 polling stations in the eight regional constituencies throughout Cambodia this morning, from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.

A total of 11,747 eligible voters, including 125 members (17 female) of the National Assembly and 11,622 commune/Sangkat councillors (2,568 female), go to today’s polls.

Four political parties, including the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Khmer Will Party, FUNCINPEC Party, and National Power Party, have been contesting for 58 among the 62 seats at the Senate, while two of the remaining seats will be appointed by His Majesty the King and the other two by the National Assembly.

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, the CPP President, who is running for the Senate presidency casted his vote at office No. 3001 in Hun Sen Regional Pedagogy Centre in Kandal province this morning.

The 4th Senate Election took place in 2018, during which CPP won all the 58 seats.

The Senate of Cambodia was established on Mar. 25, 1999 with 6
1 senators. At that time, the senate members were appointed not by election, of them 33 were from the CPP, 21 from the FUNCINPEC Party and seven from the Sam Rainsy Party.
