Bangladesh Eyes Import of Cambodian Rice

Bangladesh is interested in expanding import of Cambodian rice to the country.

The intention was made by H.E. Mohammed Abdul Hye, Bangkok-based Bangladesh Ambassador to Cambodia during a meeting with H.E. Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries here in Phnom Penh early this week.

H.E. Mohammed Abdul Hye said although Bangladesh’s agriculture, especially the rice production has tripled since 1971, it remains insufficient to meet the demand by the country’s 160 million population.

Bangladesh needs to import from 1 to 1.5 million tonnes of rice annually, he added.

H.E. Veng Sakhon welcomed the intention, stressing Cambodia’s agricultural development, transforming from food insecurity to food surplus in the country.

Cambodia has 6 million tonnes of food surplus and is upgrading it into export quality, emphasised the minister.

The minister shared the procedure options of Cambodian rice export to Bangladesh, and urged the establishment of a joint working group to handle the work.
