EU Ambassador Praises Cambodia’s Stance on Russia-Ukraine War and Peace Efforts for Myanmar


Cambodia’s stance on Russia-Ukraine war and peace efforts for Myanmar have been appreciated by EU Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Igor Driesmans during his courtesy visit to Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, at the Senate Palace here this morning.

As the EU Special Envoy to Myanmar as well, H.E. Igor Driesmans stressed the importance of values such as human rights, democracy and freedom of expression for the EU and the need to find a solution to bring Myanmar back to normalcy.

Besides, the ambassador spoke highly of the long-standing relationship between EU and Cambodia, especially in trade area as the two-way trade volume has reached more than 5 billion euros.

In reply, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his pride for working closely with the EU over the past 30 years. He thanked the EU for its assistance to Cambodia in rebuilding the country, such as infrastructure construction, agriculture, human resource training, demining, etc.

The senate president also recalled that Camb
odia has regular consultative meetings with the EU and the Kingdom is a country coordinator for the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations.

On Myanmar issue, Samdech Techo is determined not to give up the peace efforts for Myanmar even though the situation remains difficult and complicated.

For the Russia-Ukraine war, the former Cambodian Premier and the EU ambassador shared the same idea that war could not be ended with war, but negotiations.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said he is following the outcome of the Ukraine Peace Summit in Geneva without the presence of Russia, the main party of the war.

The Cambodian senate president and the EU ambassador also discussed the situation surrounding the recent European Parliament elections and the consequences of the elections in some European countries.
