A married couple, both graduates of Ungku Omar Polytechnic with a Diploma in Land Survey, decided to venture into a new field, making cakes and crepe, for a living.

There was no turning back nor regrets for Mohd Roslan Ibrahim and his wife, Teh Samrose Mahasan, both 31, in changing their vocation as their cake and crepe business, which they set up in 2018, is doing very well.

More so, the couple has joined the “Menu Rahmah” programme, an initiative by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry with strategic partners, to help reduce the cost of living.

As a participant in the Menu Rahmah programme, the couple is offering “Rahmah dessert” at only RM1 for a slice of their fresh-baked cakes and crepes at their stall in Bercham here.

The stall is open at 3 pm from Tuesday to Sunday.

Mohd Roslan, who was a land surveyor for six years, decided to quit his job after his company experienced problems during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“When I was working, my wife made cheesecakes and durian crepes and sold them through agents in the state. After quitting my job, I decided to help my wife full-time.

“And with the increasing cost of living, my wife and I decided to do our part by participating in the Menu Rahmah programme, offering Rahmaf Desserts for only RM1,” he said when met at his stall.

He said business was brisk with all the cakes and crepes at the stall sold off in less than an hour on the first day they offered the Rahmah Desserts after it went viral on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Teh Samrose, who also holds a degree in event management, said their customers queued as early as 2.30 pm although the stall only opens at 3 pm.

She said she and her husband decided to offer the Rahmah Desserts so that the less affordable could also get to eat the cakes and crepes at a cheaper price.

“The idea of selling cakes and ‘desserts’ for RM1 came about when I think about the rising cost of living where not everybody can afford to have cakes and crepes.

“At my stall, with only RM10, my customers get to buy an assorted of cakes, crepes and doughnuts, which are freshly baked and made,” she said, adding that she also promotes her business at Samrose Dessert and Crepes on Facebook.
