Outcomes of Meeting between FMs of Cambodia and Brunei Darussalam

The following is the outcome of the meeting between H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and H.E. Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, released this evening by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation:
On 9 February 2022, His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, had a video call with His Excellency Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam. H.E. Dato Erywan congratulated Cambodia’s assumption of ASEAN Chairmanship under the theme «ASEAN A.C.T: Addressing Challenges Together» and affirmed Brunei’s full support for the success of Cambodia in this role. The two Foreign Ministers had a cordial exchange of views on bilateral relations and on ASEAN matters.
On enhancing Cambodia-Brunei ties, as the two countries marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn expressed high appreciation that His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei has desire to make a state visit to Cambodia before the upcoming ASEAN Summits and related summits in November. He accepted with pleasure the invitation extended by His Excellency Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof to pay an early official visit to Brunei Darussalam at a mutually convenient date and agreed with his counterpart on signing the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia and His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on Bilateral Consultations.
The two Foreign Ministers discussed extensively on the situation in Myanmar and ASEAN effort to support de-escalation of the crisis and attainment of a peaceful solution based on the Five-point Consensus agreed at ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on 24 April 2021. His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn briefed his Bruneian counterpart on his plan to make the first visit to Myanmar as the Special Envoy and to engage with all parties concerned in finding ways and means to ensure safe and timely delivery of humanitarian relief to all the people in Myanmar who are in urgent need of help. His Excellency Dato Erywan expressed commitment to give utmost support to His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn in performing his role as the ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy on Myanmar.
Both the Ministers had similar views on the complexity of the situation in Myanmar which needs to be addressed through a step-by-step approach. The two Ministers concurred that ASEAN should continue to persevere in engendering an inclusive process of dialogue, which should be Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned, to end violence, prevent worsening humanitarian conditions and achieve durable peace. They shared commitment to work together, along with other ASEAN colleagues, to expedite progress on the implementation of Five-point Consensus and to further strengthen the centrality and unity of ASEAN.
Both Foreign Ministers looked forward to discussing ASEAN Community building process and external partnerships at the upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ (AMM) Retreat on 16-17 February 2022 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which will be the first major meeting among the 10 Member States during Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2022.
