Promoting Cambodia’s Water Resources Management System

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has asked France to mobilise support for Cambodia to further improve its water resources management system.

The request was made by H.E. Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, during a meeting with H.E. Jacques Pellet, Ambassador of France to Cambodia, and Mrs. Sandrine Boucher, the French Development Agency (AFD) Country Director for Cambodia here in Phnom Penh on Sept. 20.

According to the minister, AFD is financially supporting the Water and Agricultural Sector Project (WASP) 2015-2019 in Kandal, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, and Banteay Meanchey provinces, and the Water Resource Management and Agro-ecological Transition for Cambodia (WAT4CAM) Programme Phase I, which has been implemented since 2019 in Battambang and Banteay Meanchey provinces and is scheduled to finish in 2025.

Another project supported by AFD is the restoration of the Svay Chek reservoir, whose feasibility study will be completed in November 2023.

The minister also shared the ministry’s consideration of organising an annual forum between the ministry and development partners to strengthen cooperation and investment in water resources in Cambodia.

He spoke highly of the significant contribution of the Government of France, especially AFD, to Cambodia’s water resources sector for over two decades and considered AFD a special partner of Cambodia in poverty alleviation, people’s living standards improvement, and climate change response.
