Siem Reap Num Banchok Listed as Collective Trademark

Siem Reap “Num Banchok”, Khmer traditional rice noodles, has been listed as a collective trademark by the Ministry of Commerce.

The update was shared by H.E. Ho Sivyong, Government Delegate in charge as Director General of Trade Service of the Ministry of Commerce in a gathering on the origin of Siem Reap noodle producers and traders in Preah Dak commune of the province’s Banteay Srei district on April 4.

The listing of Num Banchok trademark is aimed for a compilation of the noodle production formula for knowledge sharing and passing on to the next generations and tourists, said H.E. Ho Sivyong.

He was positive that in the future, there will be a push for the packaging of noodle for export.

H.E. Suon Vichea, Advisor and Director of Intellectual Property Department of the Ministry of Commerce, said to promote local products for export guided by the Cambodia Trade Integration Strategy for 2019-2023, the ministry is listing geographical and collective trademarks.

The ministry has scheduled to officially launch the geographical trademark of Kampot and Kep salt, Takeo Lobster, and Kampot-Kep fish sauce; and the collective trademarks of Kampong Thom pounded rice (Ambok Kampong Thom), Siem Reap noodle (Siem Reap Num Banchok), Koh Pi grapefruit, and Battambang coconut later this month.

So far, Kampot Pepper, Kampong Speu palm sugar, Koh Trong grapefruit, and Mondulkiri wild honey have been listed for their geographical trademarks, while Phnom Penh noodle (Phnom Penh Kuyteav), Kampong Thom pounded rice and Preah Vihear rice for their collective trademarks.
