Restoration Project of Sras Srang’s Terrace Completed

The restoration project of Sras Srang’s terrace, which started in early January 2022, was completed in July 2022, according to a news release of the APSARA National Authority this morning.

The project was conducted by the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology of APSARA National Authority, said the source, stressing that after being renovated, the Sras Srang’s terrace will be able to maintain its longevity for the next generation of Cambodians and enhance the beautification of this terrace.

Mr. Krem Kruon, the head of the restoration site, said that the restoration work of Sras Srang’s terrace is to consolidate the terrace’s structure to be strong. He explained that the Sras Srang’s terrace was dilapidated due to age, eroding its laterite foundation and the stones that were scattered from the original position.

Mr. Krem Kroun continued that for the first step, the team scratched the terrace’s plan, removed the stones for cleaning, registering, and restoring, as well as conducted archeological excavations to study the foundation condition. After reinforcing the foundation using the traditional method, the experts assembled the laterites and sandstones to their original places, adding a small number of new stones, and the team sealed the foundation to prevent water from damaging the foundation.

Mr. Kroun added that Sras Srang’s terrace had been restored once during the French colony by preparing stones, pouring concrete, and pouring soil mixture to strengthen the foundation, but due to age and nature, rainwater eroded the foundation, causing landslides in various places.
