China, Cambodia Vowed To Strengthen Cooperation Between Legislatures

Wang Chen, vice chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met with Cheam Yeap, first vice-president of the National Assembly of Cambodia, via video link yesterday.

Wang, also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, spoke highly of the China-Cambodia traditional friendship and continuous development of China-Cambodia comprehensive strategic partnership.

He said that, the NPC of China is ready to work with the Cambodian National Assembly, to promote bilateral practical cooperation, facilitate cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and safeguard common interests as legislative bodies.

For his part, Cheam Yeap said that, Cambodia firmly adheres to the one-China principle and expressed the hope that the National Assembly of Cambodia will strengthen cooperation with the NPC of China, to deepen exchanges and mutual learning.

Japan’s Support Requested to Train Cambodian Peacekeepers

Cambodia has asked Japan to continue training Cambodian peacekeeping troops deployed under the United Nation umbrella.

The request was made by H.E. Gen. Sem Sovanny, Director General of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mines and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance (NPMEC) during his meeting with Colonel Ishihara Masanao, Japan’s Military Attaché to Cambodia here in Phnom Penh this week.

H.E. Gen. Sem Sovanny briefed Colonel Ishihara Masanao that since 2013, Japan has conducted 9 training courses for a total of 140 Cambodian peacekeepers in engineering and measurement skills.

Japan also provided the training of trainers virtually to five Cambodians during the COVID-19 and seven others went to get trained in Japan.

This year 2022 is the 30th anniversary of the Japan Self-Defence Forces’ participation in the peacekeeping operation (PKO) in Cambodi, he added.

The centre is getting ready at the Peacekeeping Operations school to host tripartite project (Japan, UN, and Cambodia) on Heavy Engineering Machinery Training 2024.

Colonel Ishihara Masanao accepted the request, and pledged to continue helping the centre to develop Cambodian peacekeeping human resources.

Nearly 900 Foreign Nationals Rescued from Trafficking from January to August

Cambodian competent authorities rescued 890 foreign victims of trafficking from January to the fourth week of August, according to a statement released on Aug. 26 by the Ministry of Interior.

It was circulated under the name of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng who is also the President of the National Committee for Counter Trafficking.

According to the statement, the rescued foreign nationals were resulted by the authorities’ interventions in 74 human trafficking cases, and filed the lawsuit against 17 of the cases.

Through the crackdown, the authorities have detained 83 suspects who confessed they were part of the rings with leaders in their respective countries and accomplices in Cambodia.

As explained by the victims, they were deceived through social media to illegally enter Cambodia with promise of decent employment, however, they ended up working for illegal online gambling, abused and trafficked.

In the statement, Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng expressed his regret of the incidents and strongly condemned the inhuman acts.

Under the leadership of Cambodia Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Cambodia is very committed to counter human trafficking of all forms, he continued.

He also thanked national and international public and institutions based in Cambodia for reporting the case and encouraged them to continue the cooperation through given contacts in the announcement.
