FREE FLIGHT ACTIVITY A BOOST FOR PERAK TOURISM INDUSTRY


IPOH, The free flight activity or training birds to roam freely outdoors before returning to their handlers has the potential to enhance the tourism industry in Perak, particularly the ecotourism sector.

State Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said that this activity has good potential among nature lovers and avian enthusiasts.

“The activity is done in groups, and they even have their own communities nationwide, indirectly fosters camaraderie among enthusiasts and pet owners, thereby stimulating the state’s ecotourism sector,” he told a press conference after launching the Perak Parrot Association at the Iskandar Polo Club here today.

Loh said the association is the second to be officially registered after Putrajaya.

Meanwhile, Perak Parrot Association patron Rozamir Zulkifli said the association currently has 150 members.

“We encourage parrot owners to register with the association because we want to bring all bird owners under one roof to plan vario
us future activities,’ he said.

NINE-YEAR WAIT FOR TWINS ENDS IN TRAGEDY FOR COUPLE


GUA MUSANG, The husband and wife couple who were killed in a tragic accident at Kilometer 43, Jalan Gua Musang-Lojing, here were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their bundle of joy (twins) after a nine-year wait.

The victims were identified as Ridwan Effendy Yusof, 43, and his pregnant wife Suhana Khairudin, 37.

Suhana’s eldest sister Suhaily Khairudin, 49, said her sister was six months pregnant and due to give birth in September.

According to her, Suhana had just undergone a procedure to transfer amniotic fluid for one of her foetus that lacked the fluid at the Raja Permaisuri Tengku Bainun Hospital in Ipoh, Perak.

‘She (Suhana) was given permission to return home after the procedure yesterday afternoon and the couple left Ipoh but had initially planned to spend the night at a hotel in Cameron Highlands,’ she told reporters at the Forensic Unit of the Gua Musang Hospital, here today.

Meanwhile, Suhana’s relative Hakiah Nor, 61, said the late Suhana had informed her that they had to sleep in the car si
nce the hotels were fully booked in Cameron Highlands before continuing their journey to Kota Bahru this morning.

‘I had suggested that they come to Kuala Lumpur and use the Karak Highway to return home but they refused and continued their journey using Jalan Lojing,’ she said.

Meanwhile, the couple’s nine-year-old second son Akid Darwisy was traumatised after witnessing the condition of his dead parents at the scene.

WEAK EARTHQUAKE DETECTED NEAR SEMPORNA


KUALA LUMPUR, A weak earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale was detected 50 kilometres (km) from Semporna, Sabah at 2.49 pm today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said in a statement that the epicentre of the quake was 4.4 degrees north and 118.9 degrees east at a depth of 10 km.

The department said that the earthquake would not result in a tsunami threat to Malaysia.

PILGRIMS STRANDED IN MAKKAH CONVEY APPRECIATION TO M’SIAN GOVT FOR BRINGING THEM HOME SAFELY


SEPANG, Haj pilgrims who were stranded in Makkah for a month expressed thier appreciation to the MADANI government for bringing them back to Malaysia safely.

Speaking to reporters after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 here today, a retiree who had worked in the private sector and only wanted to be known as Mohammad said the assistance provided by the government had eased the process and procedures to ensure a safe return home.

‘I wish to thank the government and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,’ he said briefly as he had to end the conversion since his wife who was nearby collapsed and nearly fainted due to fatigue.

Mohamad, 60, and his wife Ju, 58, arrived at the KLIA Terminal 2, at 7pm via a flight from Singapore.

The media had recently reported that a husband and wife couple were stranded in Makkah and appealed for help after a tourist agency that handled their trip to the Holy land to perform the Haj, using a tourist visa did not cooperate by refusing to r
eturn their passports to enable them to return to Malaysia.

Meanwhile, their third child, Ena, 33, said due to the poor condition of her parents, she contacted the Malaysian Counsular General office in Jeddah on Wednesday to seek help.

She said her mother had been suffering from high blood pressure and a weak heart for the past five years.

‘I started contacting the Counsular’s office in Jeddah to explain the situation faced by her parents and about 300 other victims.

‘The office was very helpful and kept providing updates on a daily basis, including sending their pictures and their progress to me,’ said Ena who is a legal adviser.

Ena said the Consular General’s office in Jeddah had been dealing with the tour agency, urging the agency to return their passports and manage the cost of their return.

‘Alhamdulillah, they finally left Jeddah yesterday and transitted in Singapore before leaving to KLIA today,’ she said adding that her parents left to Makkah on May 2.

Ena added that she had also lodged a poli
ce report and given her statement to the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Lembaga Tabung Haji and the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission regarding the incident.

FIVE FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECTS COSTING RM247 MLN IMPLEMENTED IN SPS


NIBONG TEBAL, Five short-term and long-term flood mitigation projects worth a total of RM247.1 million are being and will be implemented in the Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) here that will benefit more than 10,238 families.

Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said three of the five projects are short-term projects in the Sungai Bakap state constituency.

He said the projects, under the Caruman Saliran Negeri (State Drainage Contribution) allocation, would be implemented by the Penang Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS).

“The three short-term projects are in Kampung Changkat Dain, Kampung Besar and Kampung Sepulau, involving total implementation estimated at RM200,000 for each project and benefiting 150 families in the areas involved.

“All three projects will begin at the end of this month and are expected to be completed in three months,’ he told a media conference on the project here today.

Also present were Nibong Tebal Member of Parliament Fadhlina Si
dek, who is also the Education Minister, and Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid.

Zairil said the projects would include work to upgrade the riverbanks of Sungai Baong, Sungai Buaya and Sungai Junjung as well as river dredging, river widening and building Gabion retaining walls at all three rivers.

Meanwhile, he said the two long-term projects to be implemented under the Federal government allocation totalling RM246.5 million are the Lembangan Sungai Jawi Flood Mitigation Project and the Sungai Kechil Flood Mitigation Project.

He said over 10,000 families affected by floods in the Jawi and Sungai Bakap constituencies are expected to benefit from the projects, which will also help reduce the frequency of floods.
