ASEAN VARSITY GAMES: NATIONAL SWIMMERS END CAMPAIGN WITH ANOTHER GOLD


SURABAYA, The national swimming camp delivered another gold medal on the final day of the event at the ASEAN University Games 2024 (AUG 2024) here today.

Of the six events the Malaysian swimmers took part in at the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) swimming pool today, it was Low Zheng Yong who struck gold in the men’s 200-metre (m) with a time of two minutes 08.48 seconds (s) as compatriot Liew Zheng Wye (2:10.23s) settled for silver.

The swimming camp also bagged three bronze medals on the final day of action at the pool.

The three bronze medals came courtesy of Bryan Leong Xin Rin (men’s 50m freestyle in 23.05s); Georgene Wee Ee Jern (women’s 200m butterfly in 2:23.96s); and the men’s 400m medley relay team (Terence Ng Shin Jian, Hii Puong Wei, Bryan and Tan Khai Xin in 3:58.54s).

This means the national swimmers landed nine golds, seven silvers and 16 bronzes throughout the six days of the competition.

Meanwhile, Lik Zhang Lye, Mukhriez Shah Mahmood Shah, Muhd Hafizuddin Zulkifli and Fah
man Arasy Ayub contributed a silver medal in the men’s team chess event.

Malaysia also clinched three bronze medals in chess through Puteri Munajjah Az-Zahraa Azhar (women’s singles); Zhang Lye (men’s singles); and Puteri Munajjah, Chua Jia Tien, S. Nithyalakshmi and Puteri Rifqah Fahada Azhar (women’s team).

On Day Seven of the AUG 2024 tomorrow, all eyes will be on badminton, with Malaysia having four representatives in the final rounds.

Tomorrow will also see the start of the athletics programme and hopes are high that Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi will shine the brightest in the men’s 100m event.

Malaysia remain in third place in the medal standings with a medal haul of 14 golds, 17 silvers and 27 bronzes, with Indonesia (70-56-37) leading the pack and Thailand (24-20-11) in second spot.

ESPORTS: MLBB SIDE HOMEBOIS OUT TO DO BETTER IN SAUDI ARABIA


KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Mobile Legends Bang Bang (MLBB) team,HomeBois are determined to make a significant impact after having qualified for the 2024 Mid-Season Cup (MSC) group stage in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

HomeBois coach Khairul Azman Mohd Sharif said that the team are well-prepared for the tournament and aim to perform strongly after failing to qualify for the group stage in the previous edition.

‘All of us in the team want to be champions. In the last MSC, We did not have the chance to go to the group stage, but now that we have, we want to do better.

“This time, we are addressing our previous problems by getting some help from our imports and we are ready to improve,’ he said in a statement today.

HomeBois secured tickets to the group stage after emerging victorious in the seven-team wild card stage of MSC 2024 held in Riyadh, over the weekend.

HomeBois successfully edged Entity7 team 3-1 in a gruelling best-of-five match in the finals yesterday to clinch the single wild card ticket on stake.

ois will compete in Group C alongside Liquid ECHO from the Philippines, Team Spirit (Commonwealth of Independent States), and Twisted Minds (Saudi Arabia).

Another Malaysian team, Selangor Red Giants (SRG) also qualified and will compete in Group B alongside Team Falcons (Saudi Arabia), Fnatic ONIC (Indonesia), and See You Soon (Cambodia).

According to the tournament format, each group will play a single round-robin best-of-two matches in the group stage, with the top two advancing to the knockout stage.

DEFENDING CHAMPS TAJIKISTAN CONFIRM PARTICIPATION IN MERDEKA TOURNAMENT


KUALA LUMPUR: Tajikistan, the defending champions of the 2023 Merdeka Tournament, will return to defend their title at the 43rd edition scheduled to take place from Sept 2-10.

In addition to Malaysia hosting the event and the 102nd-ranked Tajikistan team, Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman announced that two more teams, Lebanon (117th) and the Philippines (147th), will add colour to the competition to be held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium here.

He said that the draw for all four teams will be on a later date to determine their opponents for the semi-finals, followed by the final and the third-place playoff.

‘This marks the first time the Merdeka Tournament has been successfully organised consecutively in 16 years, since its last consecutive editions in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Previously, it was held in 2013 and resumed after a 10-year hiatus last year.

‘FAM hopes that Harimau Malaya supporters can once again enliven the 2024 Merdeka Tournament by attending
the matches at the National Stadium, especially as the 43rd edition coincides with the National Month, following National Day on Aug 31 and leading up to Malaysia Day on Sept 16,’ he said in a statement today.

In the previous edition held at the same venue, the Harimau Malaya defeated India 4-2 in the semi-finals but had to settle for the runners-up title after a 0-2 loss to Tajikistan in the final.

Cambodia Dragon Boat Grabs Gold Medal at a Competition in Russia

Cambodia dragon boat has grabbed three medals, including one gold and two bronze at the International Dragon Boat Festival in Russia.

Cambodia won the gold medal on June 30 in Men’s D10 2,000 metres event in 9:10:117, followed by Indonesia in 9:15:587, and Uzbekistan in 9:19:505.

This is a pride of Cambodia, which derives from the athletes’ efforts and the support from the management of Cambodian Canoe and Rowing Federation (CCRF), said H.E. Chay Sichoeurn, Deputy Secretary General of CCRF.

The International Dragon Boat Festival took place on June 29-30, with the participation of athletes from host Russia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, India, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Cambodia joined three disciplines including Men’s D10 200m, Men’s D10 500m, and Men’s D10 2,000m.

Cambodia’s Aquatic Products Enter Chinese Market


Cambodia has exported some 38 tonnes of aquatic products to China’s market in the first five months of this year, a report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries showed on Monday.

Some batches of aquatic products exported from Cambodia to China included live mantis shrimp, live eel, frozen eel, and frozen freshwater glass shrimp, according to the report.

The export of aquatic products to China is a significant move for fishery sector in Cambodia in addition to agricultural products such as milled rice, fresh mango, banana, and longan.

Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, at the celebration of National Fisheries Day 2024 held on July 1 in Kampong Cham province, asked relevant parties to increase quality control, safety, processing capacity and development of fishery value chains to strengthen the competitiveness of Cambodian fishery products, both for domestic and foreign markets.

The Premier also called on development partners and the private sector to be
more supportive through the provision of technology and capital, including low-interest financing, to promote aquaculture and processing of Cambodian fishery products.
