70-Year-Old Malaysian Retiree Achieves PhD, Inspires Family and Community

Kuala Lumpur – Datuk Dr. Md Damiri Md Sairi, a 70-year-old retiree and grandfather of thirteen, has fulfilled his 46-year dream by obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). His accomplishment serves as a beacon of inspiration, challenging age-related stereotypes in education.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Md Damiri, who retired from the Perak Land and Mines Director’s Office, completed his PhD in land and forest studies and was awarded his degree today. His journey towards this achievement showcases his enduring passion for learning and his commitment to discipline, especially in the face of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Md Damiri shared his philosophy that learning is an endless process, akin to exploring a vast ocean. He observed that while pursuing education in later years is common abroad, it is less usual in Malaysia. His determination to continue his education after retiring in 2011 was fueled by his desire to delve deeper into his former professional field.

Despite the challenges, including his responsibilities as the chairman of a mosque in Rapat Setia Baru, Ipoh, and his commitment to his family in Kuala Lumpur, Dr. Md Damiri credits his success to strict discipline and the unwavering support of his wife and children.

The graduation ceremony was doubly significant for the Md Damiri family, as it also celebrated the achievement of his son, Dr. Mohamad Hazrol, 30, who received a PhD from UPM on the same day. Dr. Mohamad Hazrol expressed that his father’s pursuit of a PhD at the age of 70 was a significant inspiration for him to embark on his own doctoral journey.

Dr. Md Damiri’s achievement not only fulfills a personal dream but also sets an empowering example for lifelong learning. It underscores the message that age should not be a barrier to education and personal growth.
