Asia and the Pacific – Seasonal Monitor, November 2022

• In November, heavy rains caused floods in Indonesia and Philippines. In Indonesia, 145,424 people were affected, 50,075 displaced and 27,745 houses damaged. In Philippines, nearly 25,000 households were affected in Davao provinces.

• In Pakistan, water remained in many areas since the flood in August. Over 2.2 million houses are estimated damaged.

• The government of Tuvalu declared a state of emergency due to the extreme drought, already affecting 11,000 people.

Seasonal Outlook

• Tropical cyclone activity is expected between 28 November-11 December in Philippines.

• Higher than normal rainfall is likely in eastern Cambodia, southern Lao PDR, Philippines, Fiji, Tonga and Vanuatu.

• Drier conditions are projected in other areas of Southeast Asia and Southwest and Central Pacific Islands.

• La Niña is likely to continue towards late 2022 and on to early 2023.

Western Asia Subregion

• August-November 2022 rainfall was above average in areas of Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and most of Tajikistan.

• The sowing and growing of winter barley and wheat crops continued under favorable weather conditions except drier than average condition in Afghanistan and flood affected areas in Pakistan.

• Short term forecast (1-10 December) shows below average rainfall conditions while near average rain is expected by the long-term seasonal forecast.

Eastern Asia Subregion

August-November 2022 rainfall was slight to moderate rainfall in major parts of Cambodia, southern DPRK, central and northern of India, southern Lao PDR, southern Nepal, central Philippines, and eastern Sri Lanka.

Vegetation were below average in areas of Bangladesh, Cambodia, DRPK, India, Myanmar and Nepal. Harvesting of wet season rice and sowing of dry season rice are ongoing under favorable weather condition, except flood affected areas.

Short term forecast for 1-10 December 2022 shows drier than average conditions across Eastern Asia Subregion, but wetter than average conditions in Cambodia, Lao PDR, southern Myanmar and Philippines. December 2022-February 2023 seasonal forecast predicts above average rainfall in areas of Cambodia, Lao PDR and Philippines.

Pacific Subregion

August-November 2022 rainfall was above average in most Southwest Pacific Island States.

Sowing of wet season rice and maize are ongoing under favourable weather condition in Indonesia and Timor Leste.

Short term forecast for 1-10 December 2022 shows wetter than average conditions in most of Southwest Pacific Islands
