Cambodia’s Forests Cover 8.5 Million Hectares

Forest coverage in Cambodia accounts for 46.86 percent or approximately 8.5 million hectares of the country’s land area, Ministry of Environment’s report showed.

Of the total forest cover, some 7.3 million hectares, equivalent to 41 percent of Cambodia’s land area, are protected areas and biodiversity corridors, said H.E. Neth Pheaktra, the ministry’s Secretary of State at a press conference organised by the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit in Phnom Penh this morning.

The Kingdom has 76 protected areas and biodiversity corridors, in which about 100 locations are ecotourism destinations, he pointed out.

“Natural resource management and biodiversity conservation, local people’s living standard enhancement, educational promotion efficiency, and ‘Cambodia, My Homeland’ inspirational slogan have turned the environment sector into ‘green belt’ and community-based tourism,” he said.
