Participating countries in the 16th virtual East Asia Summit (EAS) this evening, including 10 ASEAN Member States and 8 dialogue partners, expressed their support for multilateralism which is an important factor for economic and security cooperation and economic recovery from COVID-19 crisis.
The information was shared by H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister, after the summit.
The EAS leaders discussed many topics, including the cooperation in combating COVID-19, he pointed out, adding that they agreed to promote the post-COVID-19 economic recovery, especially to boost the tourism recovery as well as the cooperation in green energy, education and so on.
The leaders also agreed to develop the New Plan of Action, he continued.
According to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, major economies of EAS supported the ASEAN’s core role in maintaining regional peace, stability and security and promoting cooperation, and pledged to provide more support and assistance for ASEAN, particularly in combating COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 economic recovery.
Besides, the EAS leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues such as the South China Sea, Korean Peninsula, and Myanmar issues.
At the end of the meeting, they adopted the EAS Leaders’ Statement on Mental Health Cooperation, the EAS Leaders’ Statement on Sustainable Recovery and the EAS Leaders’ Statement on Economic Growth through Tourism Recovery.
The leaders also listened to the update reports of the director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on the current health and trade situation after being hit by COVID-19 crisis in the past 18 months.
