IWK to Install Solar PV Technology at 396 Sewage Treatment Plants in Phase 1

Kuala Lumpur – Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) has selected 396 sewage treatment plant sites in Peninsular Malaysia for the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology in its Phase 1 initiative. This project is a part of IWK’s transition towards more sustainable operations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, highlighted that this initiative, under the Self-Consumption (SelCo) model, is expected to produce 22,781 Megawatt-hours (MWh) of solar energy annually. This will lead to an estimated annual electricity saving of RM1.9 million by 2026. IWK has partnered with solar PV installation experts and signed renewable energy power purchase agreements (REPPA) with four companies. These companies will invest a total of RM84 million in the project.

During a working visit to IWK’s Pantai 1 Sewage Treatment Plant, Nik Nazmi revealed that Phase 2 of the project is also being assessed, involving 583 sites with the potential to generate 21,500 MWh of solar energy annually, resulting in further savings. The completion of both phases is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 34.4 kilotons of carbon dioxide equivalent (ktCO2e) by 2027.

IWK CEO Narendran Maniam stated that this initiative aligns with the government’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) towards achieving the carbon reduction target by 2040. Out of 8,874 sewage treatment plants and pump stations, 1,811 sites have potential for solar energy utilization.
