JUDOKAS SIGN OFF AS SECOND BEST TEAM IN ASEAN VARSITY GAMES


SURABAYA, Malaysia’s judo squad concluded their campaign at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024 with three gold, three silver, and one bronze medal, securing the position as the second best team in this prestigious sporting event.

On the final day of the combat sports competition, Malaysia clinched a silver medal in the mixed team event, placing them second after completing the round robin bouts.

Team manager Wan Eizalie Wan Mohamed Nor expressed satisfaction with the squad’s performance for exceeding their initial target of two gold medals upon starting their campaign in Surabaya.

“Overall, the judo team have shown excellent performance throughout AUG 2024. All ten athletes, comprising five men and five women, contributed medals through individual and team events.

“With the dedicated support from our national coaches, this has boosted the morale of our judo athletes to perform exceptionally well in this AUG,” he told reporters today.

During the four-day judo competition at the biennial Games, Malaysi
a secured three gold medals through Afiq Danish Zapri (-90kg), Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed (-81kg), and Nur Farah Izzati Wallah (-52kg). Silver medals were won by Siti Roha Maszuraini (+78kg), Muhammad Fareez Mohameid (-60kg) and in the mixed team event, while bronze was contributed by Tan Yi Ying (-73kg).

Malaysia are currently in third place with 11 gold, 14 silver and 19 bronze medals, behind Thailand in second place and Indonesia at the top of the medal tally.
