LAUNCH OF NATIONAL MONTH: CHALLENGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA AMONG TOPICS DISCUSSED AT PERDANA FORUM

Challenges in the use of social media are among the issues discussed at the Perdana Forum on Islamic Affairs entitled “Legacy of Independence” which was held in conjunction with the launch of the 2023 National Month and the Fly Jalur Gemilang.

Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) president and vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman said one of the major challenges in maintaining national peace is the misuse of social media platforms.

As such, he said, users who want to upload statements on social sites need to be responsible for their actions.

“When they (social media users) convey an opinion or information, they will also ensure that whatever is conveyed is something that has a basis,” he said during a recording of the forum programme at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah, Meru Raya, here tonight.

Among other contents discussed during the forum were the meaning of independence, freedom in Islam and leadership among the younger generation.

The guest panelists included Teras Pengupayaan Malay (TERAS) president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid and preacher Ustaz Harryanto Rizal Rokman with Ustaz Hariri Daud as the moderator.

Also present at the forum was Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the chairman of the National Day and Malaysia Day 2023 Main Committee.

Others present included State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin representing the Menteri Besar of Perak, the secretary-general of the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and the State Communications, Multimedia and NGO Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi Helmi.

National Day is celebrated on Aug 31 every year, with the last one held at Dataran Putrajaya, while the Malaysia Day celebration is on Sept 12 scheduled to take place in Kuching, Sarawak.
